Three Funerals and Wedding
No. Seriously. That’s the line my brother Scott came up with to describe our last couple years as a family. With the deaths of my Stepfather, Mother, and Grandmother in the last 18 months, it was so nice to be in South Carolina this past weekend for a much happier occasion.
This time, I went down to celebrate my niece Anna's wedding. But, even the joyous nature of this occasion wasn’t without drama as Hurricane Ian crossed Florida and turned back toward the Carolinas and was bearing down on us. It made for some tense moments in planning and traveling the days before and for an interesting rehearsal dinner on Friday night. I must've checked weather.com and American Airlines a hundred times! Thankfully, the storm moved through in time for it to be 70 and dry for the ceremony. Anna and her new husband Connor have been dating since she had to wear a knee brace in junior high and needed help carrying her books. Poor guy didn’t know what he was getting himself into! Through the years they've survived high school, college, one breakup, and lots of bad haircuts! Overall it was a lovely event, but my personal favorites were when Anna said, “I, Connor…” during her vows, Mammy (her grandmother) got out on the dance floor with a light wand in one hand and a cane in the other, and the boiled peanuts and fried catfish tenders that were part of the spread. Those catfish tenders y’all, 🤤 .
Anyway, I’m so happy to be back in Philly for a while. Hopefully I don’t have any family situations that need my attention at least until the holidays! I’m looking forward to the fall season here and all the fun stuff there is to do in our city.
